At first, Cowley said, he was a little nervous and didn't know what to expect from the community and the issues on campus. But the experience so far has been better than they imagined.

The search ended with the arrest of Tamara Brown. The two worked together at the University of North Texas, where Brown served as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Cowley said the vacancies and interim positions prior to his arrival were intentional because the university wanted to ensure the new president had the opportunity to select members of his team.
"I would say the priorities are clear, going in as a new president," she said. "Therefore, it was imperative that we assemble a great team of leaders on our campus to ensure that we all move forward together and deliver on the institution's key priorities."

The search culminated that summer with the hiring of then associate athletics director John Fagg from the University of Arkansas. Cowley, who competes in several track and field events, said Fagg has good ideas to make the student body more active and promote more athletic events, such as theme nights and a winning program.
"It's thinking about the timing of the Games and what opportunities we have for partnerships that generate more excitement and energy," she said. "Of course, first and foremost, everyone wants to see a winning team, so their main responsibility is to help us plan to ensure success for all our sports teams."
