Grand Canyon University and the Maricopa State Community College District announced major schedule changes ahead of the upcoming fall semester because of concerns about the spread of COVID-19, university officials said in a statement.

The university originally planned to start classes on Aug. 24, but has since postponed private classes until Sept. 28 to give Arizona time to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases, the statement said.

Students will begin classes on September 8 and will spend the first three weeks of school online before moving to face-to-face classes.
"Starting the semester online will help students get off to a good start academically as they can fully focus on their studies during the three weeks before adjusting to university life," the university wrote.
For students, this semester will feature a one-on-one "blended physical distance learning model" until the end of the semester on December 18, which is a week longer than usual.

The university indicated that the September start date will bring cooler weather and allow earlier classes, activities and events to be held outside.
Some students arrive on campus earlier than their personal start date. This includes athletes scheduled to begin practice for the upcoming season in August and student leaders who will arrive on campus on September 4th for practice.
Nursing students with a clinical placement already scheduled may also have an earlier start date, but will receive more information later.

Meal plans will also be reduced to compensate for students' reduced time on campus.
In addition, the university will provide all eligible students attending the fall semester approximately $500 from the university's CARES Act fund.
The university paid 50% of the award to students during the fall semester of 2020, and instead of using the remaining $11.18 million for university expenses as allowed by law, the school will provide a $500 scholarship to graduating students for the fall semester of cold

The Maricopa State Community College District has suspended most staff and faculty from returning to its 10 school campuses until Oct. 5, according to a statement from interim university chancellor Steven Gonzalez.
