The death of a Le Moyne College student this week sparked a public conversation about mental health and prompted changes in how administrators approach social issues and concepts of cancer survivorship.

Corey Gallinger, 20, was found dead in his dorm room on Sunday, university officials announced in an email to students that day. The third-year student at Hudson Valley Community College in Salt Point is majoring in management, leadership and marketing.

In Le Moyne, Gallinger recorded the third student death since November 2019 on a campus of nearly 3,000 students.

"This is no accident," said brother Brendan Perperian. "Le Moyne needs to call it what it is. It is a health problem. And we need serious action, policy and change. "
After Gillinger's death, Le Moyne students protested for mental health services.

Several students stepped up to the microphone, explaining that they didn't know Gallinger, whose nickname was "Skyla," but that he always had a smile on his face when they passed him in the halls. "These solutions are just the beginning of creating a campus where mental health is openly discussed and not stigmatized," the petition states.
