The document resurfaced when the governor signed the Parental Bill of Rights into law. Effective July 1, the law restricts the teaching of gender identity and sexual orientation topics in Florida schools and completely bans the teaching of these topics from kindergarten through 3rd grade.

In April, DCPS board member Charlotte Joyce introduced a resolution that would, among other things, eliminate some of the guidance's suggestions regarding parent communication.

However, the Joyce ruling did not include the full sentence, which read: "Except in very limited exceptions where there is an immediate fear of physical harm, a student's sexual orientation should never be disclosed to a parent."

A key message from the DeSantis administration was that the law would allow parents to have full control over any conversations with their children about gender identity and sexual orientation, saying it was a way to protect children from "indoctrination."

Conservative lawmakers, pundits, and anti-LGBTQ activists argue that protecting LGBTQ rights is a form of "grooming" or "sexualizing" minors, though these arguments ignore inequality.
