Fischthal began his career in New York after graduating from Queens College, City University of New York, where he studied clarinet on a music scholarship. Playing the clarinet professionally, he picked up a side gig at a computer technology and services company where he managed the last Computerland operation in Manhattan, where he was eventually promoted to head of international operations.

When he retired from music, Fischthal moved to San Diego and became an independent business consultant applying the international financial system to local multinationals. When she became a stepmother, she stopped consulting and traveling and sought a career change in higher education. At SDCCD, Fischthal says she discovered her passion for service and decided to continue her education to help the San Diego community and its diverse population.
