The Canadian Forces Hate Behavior and Right-wing Extremism Research Network (RWE-CAF network) is hosting a live symposium and workshop that will bring together emerging researchers to address hate behavior and extremism in Canada and our military. Often dismissed for its lack of diversity and inclusivity, it is not just a military institution, but the way it is explored needs to change. For too long military research has been chaotic. There was little dialogue and consultation between researchers because their fields of study were different (political science, sociology, anthropology, history, applied ethics, etc.) or because they worked in different institutions (academic or public). Now more than ever, extreme views and perspectives in international security research need to be heard and seen, as they may provide answers to some of the problems facing the military establishment today.

Bringing together scientists from different countries – virtually and in person – the conference aims to explore how a military organization can be studied from more perspectives than we imagine when we think about the military. The point is to highlight what underrepresented researchers, researchers using underrepresented approaches or working in underrepresented disciplines can contribute to the table.
