Harvard Calendar 2020 21 – Harvard Divinity School (HDS) is one of the flagship schools of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The school's mission is to prepare students for religious studies or leadership roles in religion, administration, and ministry.

There are also students from Harvard schools who are interested in the former field. HDS is one of several small university divinity schools in the United States (others include the University of Chicago Divinity School, Yale Divinity School, Vanderbilt University Divinity School, and Wake Forest University Divinity School).

Completed in 1911 for $300,000, Andover Hall was designed by All and Colls, a firm specializing in medieval and religious designs, and is the only building at Harvard built in the Collegiate Gothic style of architecture.

Andover Hall was commissioned in 1906 by Andover Theological Seminary, which saw its momentum and became affiliated with the Divinity School in 1908. The hall housed a chapel, library, dormitory, seminary and classrooms. Today, the building houses a chapel and some classrooms, as well as many administrative and faculty offices.

On May 1, 2019, the building was named after philanthropists Susan Shallcross Swartz and James R. Renamed to Swartz Hall in Swartz's honor.

Built in 1913, Jewett House was named after its first resident, James Richard Jewett, professor of Arabic at Harvard University from 1914-1933. Jewett's son gave the house to Harvard for use as a divinity school, but it was used instead. By Harvard University Press. Support for Harvard's Religious Studies Library predates the founding of the Divinity School; In 1638, three-quarters of the 400 volumes John Harvard gave to Harvard College were theological in nature. Until the Divinity School was established in 1816 and the college library's duplicates were combined with new acquisitions to form a dedicated library for the school, books accounted for between one-third and one-half of the college's holdings. In 1911, Harvard Divinity School and Andover Theological Seminary formed a partnership and agreed to house their collections in a joint library. After the schools' educational partnership ended in 1926, the holdings of Andover Seminary remained with the library under a subsequent agreement.

The library's collections encompass all religious traditions to support Harvard Divinity School's approach to the study of religion. The strengths of this historical collection are Protestant Christianity, Unitarian Universalism, and biblical studies. Additional areas of focus in the second half of the 20th century include women's religious studies, the relationship of religion to race and LGBTQ studies, the ecumenical movement, interfaith relations, and religion and peacebuilding.

Charles Stang is a scholar of early Christianity specializing in Eastern varieties of early Christianity.

The Women's Studies Program (WSRP) at Harvard Divinity School was established in 1973 at the request of students to incorporate feminist perspectives into the resources, methods, and topics of the HDS curriculum.

The program brings five doctoral students to HDD visiting faculty each year. Each researcher works and teaches on a book project related to religion and gender.
