The Klein ISD School Board approved the academic calendar for the 2021-2022 school year at the Jan. 12 board meeting.

Schec Virtual College Fair

According to an announcement on the district's website, the district sent out the calendar survey on December 1. There were 14,000 responses, and about 75 percent of those responded to version A of the proposed calendar, which was unanimously approved by trustees.

Through the Klein2Go program, families are able to get lunch and snacks for their students with Curb Adoption. According to a district news release, Klein2Go has served nearly two million meals as of Jan. 8. Lunch and snacks are available seven days a week on Tuesdays at select campuses.

The new Klein2Go dinner option is offered on Thursdays from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. at all Klein ISD high school sites. Families can choose from seven days of their child's favorite meal, and meals are free for children 18 and under who do not receive an after-school meal, the release said.

Klein ISD held a pep rally to celebrate the graduation of 34 students from the Vistas High School program and the Klein Success Academy.

The ceremony is held to mark the student's graduation from the program, which provides both students at risk of not graduating with resources to help them graduate from high school at a faster pace.

"We celebrate the graduates of Vistas High School and Klein Success Academy and are proud of how they persevered and overcame many challenges," Klein ISD Superintendent Jenny McGown said in an online news release. "This moment is a true testament to the many ways Klein ISD students have the opportunity to move beyond their goals and face the next chapter of their lives."

Both programs provide comprehensive support and guidance from the school department and build relationships to help each student learn and grow, the release said.

"Klein Success Academy is focused on the future of our students," said Shelley Moore, principal of Klein Success Academy. "We know this program empowers our students to strive for success no matter what obstacles they face."

It's been a year since the last applause ceremony, which is typically held three times a year, and Vistas High School Program Director Debbie Pennington said she's more ready than ever to celebrate student achievement.

"The Vistas Middle School program and the entire staff here at Klein Success Academy could not be prouder of our students who are committed to their goals and are well on their way to completing their educational journey in Klein ISD," Pennington said. Hirsch Elementary School second grade teacher Diane Moore was recognized by the Spring ISD School Board for saving the life of a choking student during lunch on campus. This spring, Moore received the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty, or ABCD award, at a school board meeting, according to an ISD news release.

"In December, just before winter break, Ms. Moore helped a student who was choking during lunch," Senior Innovation and Communications Officer Tiffany Dunn-Oldfield said in a statement at the meeting.

"Knowing there was no time to waste, she used her safety training to perform the Heimlich maneuver, clear the student's airway and defuse the dangerous situation," Dunn-Oldfield said. "We want to give him a big round of applause for doing his duty and saving the life of one of our students."

Elementary and middle school students were invited to "chill and read" over winter break, and Spring ISD awarded prizes to those who spent the most time with a book.

According to a news release from Spring ISD, three students and two campuses won the contest, and each winning student received a prize and an Amazon Kindle tablet.

Hcde Releases Comprehensive 2021 2022 School Calendar For 25 Harris County Districts

Fourth-grader Jocelyn Chapa of Eckenrocht Elementary School read the most minutes in the elementary school category, the release said. His mother, Jessica Benavides, said Chapa loved to read, especially Harry Potter.

"He's been reading since he was little and has a huge collection of books," Benavides said. "It all started when she was little, when I took her to different story times at the local library.

Mary Neal, an eighth-grader at Roberson Middle School, won two awards for most minutes read and most read by a middle school student. During the break, he read only 2584 minutes and 62 books.

"I didn't expect to win, especially not in the Most Read category," Neal said. "I didn't think I'd read this much, but I'm still very excited." I knew I read too much because I followed it. It was 40 hours."

Bamel Middle School won the award for the most middle school reading minutes, a detailed publication, and Risk School Assistant Principal Daphne Wilson said the program benefits literacy in general, not just reading.

"We know that when our children are proficient in all the different literacy strategies, it translates into their success across the board," Wilson said. "It just means they're more successful communicators." It makes them more aware of the world they live in and how they can contribute to it.

Spring ISD teachers, principals and administrators came together last week to express their gratitude to their board of trustees during School Board Recognition Month.

"Each Spring ISD board member has an impact and plays an important role for our campus and our neighborhood," Twin Creek High School Principal Kenisha Williams said in a news release. "Its impact may not be as direct as one staff member, but it comes from creating the right environment and setting high expectations for student success."

According to a spring ISD news release, ISD trustees serve three-year terms and govern and manage the district's schools, with each trustee representing the entire district. Their duties include setting goals for the district, approving the annual budget and electing the district director.
