November 11, 2022, February 17, 2023, and May 5, 2023 were previously identified as hurricane days. These days will now be full of school days.

Before enrolling students for each school year, the supervisor (or a person authorized by him) determines the capacity of each school. Any school designation must include a class size requirement as required by the Florida Constitution and state law. Capacity determinations may also include reserved seats for ESE or other special programs.

Parents may choose to require their younger child to enroll in the same school by providing applications to all siblings on the same application. Siblings are defined as children who live at the same address and have the same guardian.

Parents with siblings currently enrolled in the Lee County School District will receive written notification prior to the first enrollment period that their sibling is enrolled in the same school for the upcoming school year. Parents do not need to fill out any documents, unless there is a request to change school registration.

Each residential/choice school has a "safe walking zone" (a two-mile zone under Florida law) designated by the district. The sizes of safe walking zones vary according to (1) residential/preference area boundaries, (2) reasonable walking distances established by Florida law, and (3) safe walking conditions. Students who live in the Safe Streets Preference Zone 1 (P1) and choose this school are given priority in the student enrollment process over students who live outside the P1 Safe Streets Zone, subject to priority and capacity. SMA only has P1 as proximity. This is due to high schools offering special programs that can attract students from different sub-zones in the area. Students may opt for longer bus times at the high school level to meet their academic needs.

Proximity 2 (P2) is implemented for students enrolled in the 8th KG class. It provides a second level of proximity selection from the end of the P1 zone to approximately 5 miles.

Students living in this zone will be offered a lottery to select schools within a given distance from their permanent residence.

Lee County School District Releases Tentative Reopening Plans

All students entering grades KG through 8 who live more than 8 miles from school will be offered a Proximity Prexim 3 (P3) option at the school in their enrollment area closest to their place of residence with the same weighting as P2. lottery.

Applications for zone attraction programs are considered and registration is conducted according to established policies and procedures, subject to student enrollment stakes, faculty capacity, and preference. First, the selection of the zonal attraction system is made. If a student is enrolled in a local school with an attractive program, their application to all four schools will not be considered. Students who do not receive enrollment in their desired zoned attractions school will be zoned eligible to transfer to their first choice zoned attractions school. In cases where the number of school applicants exceeds the number of available places, a lottery system is used. Student applications are assigned a random number which determines how their application will be assessed in the student application process. Under the plan, students have the option to choose to continue at their current school until they have completed their senior year taught at that school.
