Three members of the public and the commission criticized Goodrich's map at Tuesday's meeting. During the public hearing, the speaker suggested that the Goodrich map might be a political ploy to improve incumbent Commissioner Christian Ziegler's electoral credibility. Pat Rounds, a resident, noted that Goodrich's submissions included decorative bias information on each property, requesting that the map claims be removed from consideration.
"When you count people, you're looking at a population, not a group analysis," Rounds said. "[Goodrich's map] is discriminatory and inappropriate."

Goodrich drew the map in collaboration with his partner, Morgan Bentley, and said the pair planned to create a district that would improve the odds for a Democrat to win a seat on the Republican-controlled board.

"I think it's disgusting that this is being hailed as a tool to get Christian Ziegler elected," said Goodrich, a registered Democrat. "I don't know Christian Ziegler. I have no stake in Christian Ziegler and don't have that in mind. It's just a matter of perspective — how do we measure up to the county commission?
Goodrich advocated the use of political parties for reelection. He said the map he sent was not too late to guarantee a party win in any state, the map registered a majority of Republicans in every state, but he thought his proposal would improve the chances of undemocratic elections. Board members Bridget Ziegler and Karen Rose said the national ban was the reason for their opposition to the closed move. Adopting such a law would put the district at financial risk, Ziegler said. Today, the Commissioner of Education, Richard Corcoran, promised to freeze the pay of school board members in Broward and Alachua in response to what they are facing.

"I'm concerned that we're going to accept something that the majority of this board (knows) — it's against the law," Ziegler said. "There may be controversy at this point, but surely there will be. There will be a heavy price to pay.
Both Ziegler and Rose see the importance of mitigation efforts and believe there are other ways to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 in schools. But after district officials raised concerns about the impact of Covid-19 on school operations less than a week into the school year, many councils felt requiring masks was a reasonable response to what representatives were saying.
