CHARLOTTE, NC — UNC-Charlotte administrators planned for students to return to campus on Sept. 7, two weeks later than expected, for the start of the semester.

School officials said the semester was planned as a condensed schedule with a few days off for students.

"I really appreciate the effort Charlotte goes to in trying to take care of the students," said Gabrielle Hitchcock. "But I think it's good to use our voice to defend the students. Because of this situation, we really feel that we are not judged, we are not validated and the decision that the institution implements affects us.
The student government association passed two resolutions Tuesday, asking administrators to begin the semester on Aug. 24 and begin in person on campus on Sept. 7.

We reached out to the university, which said in a statement: "UNC-Charlotte has decided to begin the semester on Monday, September 7 in order to safely return to campus instruction in the fall. On August 24, the university held extensive discussions, consulted with public health and UNC system officials, and considered the health and safety of students and staff in making the decision. We are working with teachers and considering all options to determine the fall academic calendar and hope to share those details by the end of May. For the first time, more than 30,000 students are enrolled in the university. It is the second largest campus of the University of North Carolina
About 4,000 new freshmen, 2,600 transfer students and 2,400 new graduate students enrolled this fall, UNCC officials said.

"We are now the second-largest institution in the UNC system, with an enrollment of 30,146 students," said Sharon Gaber, Chancellor of the UNC System in Charlotte. "This record enrollment is a testament to UNC Charlotte's longstanding focus on merit, affordability and opportunity for students. Selected for its high academic achievement, the freshman class has a weighted average GPA of 3.9. In fact, a higher percentage of all new students received institutional scholarships and merit-based scholarships than last year's incoming students. "
Niners freshmen, selected from more than 26,000 transfer and transfer applications, represent North Carolina, 49 states and 91 out of 100 districts in 25 countries, according to a university news release.
