After poor voter turnout in their school district failed to provide a clear winner in their next academic calendar, Citrus County school board members decided to host a new election.

At a meeting Tuesday, Jan. 12, local education leaders agreed to return the two major proposed election calendars for the 2021-2022 school year to their officials for another vote.

Amy Crowell, director of research and accountability for the school district, told board members she would send a second email and subsequent reminders to the entire district with a link for employees to access the voting website.
Crowell plans to present the results at the next board meeting on Feb. 9, when board members will vote on choosing the next calendar.
Crowell said 48% of district officials voted within the 30-day period, compared to 60% who voted last year, which surprised Crowell and board members because voting had to be done online and links sent directly to each employee and the school's advisory board.

Crowell said that of the 1,012 votes this year, 421 (41.7%) voted for the third choice on the calendar, 418 (41.3%) for the second option and the remaining 173 votes (17.1%) for the first choice.
"This is the first time our committee has been presented with several options instead of a clear winner," Crowell said, noting that no single calendar received the most votes.
Crowell said voters like the second calendar option because Christmas break is earlier and longer, spring break coincides with Easter and the last day of the school year doesn't end in June.

Calendar three was a favorite because spring break coincided with the Citrus County Fair, Crowell said, and its two semesters had the same number of school days.
Commission members Thomas Kennedy, Sandy Counts and Vice Chair Ginger Bryant advocated sending the second and third calendars back for another vote because they wanted better voter input.
They also didn't want school advisory boards that had already voted on one of the winning calendars to vote again, leaving only two choirs.

"I wouldn't mind because I know the majority of teachers in all schools voted for (calendar) two," Counts said, citing Crowell's results.
Commission member Doug Dodd said his colleagues should go with calendar three because that's what the majority of voters chose, and bringing it back to a new vote sends a bad message to those who voted yes.
"If we say we agree with the process, we should go with calendar three," he said. "I certainly wish more people would vote … but it's the board's responsibility to set the calendar."

"I don't want 339 teachers to be mad at us for voting on a different calendar," Counts responded, before Bryant said he wasn't comfortable basing his decision on a 48 percent voter turnout.
Kennedy said the survey results are good data, but board members don't have to choose which calendar is the most popular.
"I'm not saying there won't be," he said, "but the board always votes on the calendar at the end of the day."
