How To Get Into Brown University

Important Notice: Due to the global health crisis of 2020 (COVID-19), a large number of schools in New York City have announced school closures. Please contact your school coordinator by phone/email. Brown University's summer session offers seven-week intensive courses in a variety of fields from anthropology to the visual arts, giving students the opportunity to extend their undergraduate education into a summer semester, allowing them to focus on one area. Being able to focus by taking such courses usually fills the rest of the school year, catch up on level progress, improve academic standing or explore new subjects of interest. Distinguished faculty from Brown's teaching staff and a few select faculty from other institutions make up the summer session faculty. All faculty members maintain regular office hours to assist students with their individual studies and projects. Summer sessions typically have small class sizes that allow for dynamic interaction, friendly student support, and plenty of time with the instructor and peers.

Summer session courses are equivalent to semester-long offerings packed into an accelerated seven-week summer schedule. Courses are offered on campus and online. Course meeting times vary depending on learning objectives, courses may have additional laboratory or discussion sessions. Summer session class sizes are small, allowing for a high level of interaction and engagement with the instructor and peers over the course of seven weeks.

Summer session courses may count toward a concentration or elective. Students receive one credit unit, equivalent to four semester hours.

University Academic Calendar

Note: Courses may be canceled if they do not meet the minimum required number of students. Active courses will be confirmed in early June after the initial registration period.

Unless otherwise noted in the course description, summer session courses are standard on the ABC/NC scale. Students can change their degree options until Monday 3 July 2023. After this date, grade options cannot be changed.

The last day to add or drop a course is Wednesday, June 21, 2023. All students must register for courses by this date.

Brown undergraduate students receiving financial aid during the academic year may be eligible for a summer grant for summer session fees. Eligible students will be contacted by the financial aid office in late February/early March with information about their eligibility.

Current Brown doctoral students may be eligible to enroll in summer session courses, pending the permission of the instructor and the approval of the graduate school. Doctoral students approved to enroll in a summer session course will be responsible for paying tuition separately for that course. Masters students cannot enroll in winter session courses. Eligible Brown employees who wish to complete undergraduate, advanced or on-the-job courses must enroll in the Employee Education Program (EEP) coordinated by the Benefits Office. Deadline & Calendar

Q: Can I apply for the Bruin summer session if I have already taken four Bruin courses in the previous winter and summer sessions?

Students may count up to four Brown courses taken outside of the academic year (ie, summer and/or winter) toward graduation. If you have already completed four courses, you can enroll in summer session courses for enrichment. However, the summer session course will not count towards the thirty courses you must take.

Answer: Due to the intensive nature of these courses, students may enroll in a maximum of two courses per summer session.

Registered students who wish to leave a course during the university break (22 December 2022 – 9 January 2023) should refer to the refund timetable. Students who wish to withdraw from the winter course must complete this form. The Registrar will process the course withdrawal request during the course.
