Beginning in the 2023-24 academic year, Kyrene and Tempe Union students will have longer fall and spring breaks and slightly shorter summer breaks. The Kyrene Board of Trustees last month unanimously approved the new calendar, which is now in effect in three East Valley school districts, including two of the state's largest.

Explaining the process that led to the development of the calendar, Lisa Gibson, director of talent management at Kyrene, explained that a survey of households and workers in different regions – which included a total of 8,035 unique respondents – "revealed a number of ways that mix our family and staff" between the three districts.

Of the 4,181 respondents from Kyrene, 3,280 came from families and 1,125 were from the personnel of that district. Responses from Tempe Union included 2,501 families and 775 employees.
The study's main question was whether respondents preferred a 2-2-2 schedule – two weeks off in the fall, winter and spring – or a schedule with one week off in the fall and spring and two holidays.

Kyrene respondents were almost evenly split between the two options – 46% 2-2-2 and 45% under the current plan – while 11% did not want it.
Tempe Union had about the same split, with 46% favoring 2-2-2 and 42% favoring the current calendar. But when responses were divided by families and staff, the survey showed a clear difference in opinion.
Households in all three counties favored the current calendar by 46 percent to 43 percent, while the rest did not favor it. Kyrene families also slightly preferred the current calendar over the 2-2-2 model (47 percent to 42 percent), while 45 percent of Tempe Union families favored the current system, while 43 percent favored what ended up being the system. accepted.

The daycare option concerned board member Michelle Fahy, who told Gibson and her colleagues to "spend the next year really caring about the students in the school.
"KidZone is the most flexible and affordable option for our students, but it is limited because they are understaffed," Fahy said. "Many parents would not be able to take two weeks off to take care of their children. But if Kids Zone or something like that is not available, I think it will be a big burden.

But Fahy wasn't satisfied, saying, "I just want to make sure the committee … looks at the cost to parents of these extra camps, because I think that's what causes the most stress on our families."
"I think there's a lot of positives," Fahy continued, "but I'm worried about the families, and the families are already worried about what they're hearing. … I know how limited we are in all of our districts in terms of what we can offer before and after school now. So I want to see if surveys are sent out to parents so we know in advance how many students need extra help to keep up.
At the same time, Gibson said the 2-2-2 calendar significantly reduces the "summer slide" of learning delays that occur during long summers when there is no instruction. He also said that with the new model, struggling students would get help more quickly from academic interventionists.
