Before we get to that, we need to provide an important warning that Tokyo Disney Resort is not back to normal. The parks are still seeing declining attendance, with ticket sales below their previous levels. This is mainly due to the temporary closure of restaurants, shops and entertainment. Three years after the parks closed, all of these have not returned.

Although each individual is small, this absence has a significant impact on the park's overall efficiency. The end result is packed stores and very long lines for dining options, especially during peak times. So, despite the park's reduced capacity and limited stability – which on its face looks good – the result is that crowds "feel" worse than before. In short, an attendance level of 30,000 in 2023 is not the same as 30,000 in 2019. From a population and audience perspective, 30,000 today is the equivalent of 40,000 in 2019 – and possibly more.

This affects how Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea theme park tickets are sold. The biggest change is that now only one-day tickets are available, which includes a variety of late passports. All these are based on history, prices vary based on expected demand.

Multi-day tickets are not sold as annual tickets. Part of 2023 also has a reduction in "debts" – which has boosted demand. This is important to keep in mind as the lack of annual tickets and multi-day tickets at Tokyo Disney Resort hinders the normal dynamic flow (e.g. much slower than weekdays). While true to some extent, the patterns in 2023 are not as stable or predictable as in 2019 or earlier.

We recently experienced this firsthand with Tokyo Disney Resort. On holidays, the parks are filled with some of the worst crowds we've ever encountered, and there's no difference between a mild Wednesday and a Saturday, for example.

This happened for several reasons. One was an incentive for local travel, which subsidized hotel stays and other expenses for local visitors. Additionally, there are discounted tickets for vaccinated visitors who go up.

First, it's one of two crowd-recommended calendars—and we actually listed AOKSoft for a second because it's a little harder to understand. We also received many questions from readers who had trouble using AOKSoft's Crowd Calendar, which is written only in Japanese.

With Google Translate, it's easy. The first thing you need to know is that the calendar isn't set to go to Tokyo Disneyland, but you can change it to Tokyo DisneySea with the green button above (spoiler: track audience numbers between TDL and TDS; the latter is equally low most days). The buttons to the left and right of the current month control move to the previous (left) or next (right) month.

"Today" is Monday and "Earth" is Sunday (the names of the days of the week are not reliable in Google Translate!), but it's clear if you compare the green dates on this calendar with your own. Next, the number in the box is the audience estimate, which indicates expected attendance (more on that below). Finally, at the bottom, you can change the weather to show how it affects the crowd. As with the TDL/TDS toggle buttons, this is usually a relevant change.

Above is the myth of these mass numbers, hilariously translated from Google. Obviously, the lower the number, the better. Contrary to the copy's suggestion, there were no riots on light attendance days and no violence on high attendance days. For your first visit to Tokyo Disney Resort, we recommend starting with two yellow or light days.

On Orange days, the biggest difference you'll notice is the lines at restaurants and people asking in advance for spots in the show and entertainment. There are some simple solutions for this: Eat lunch at 11:30 am. (Afternoon is when things go wrong.) And plan your fun on yellow or mild days.
