Each day there are four lunar periods: two "big", two "small". The main periods last about two hours. They start when the moon is directly above us (known as a "lunar transit") or below our feet ("reverse transit of the moon"). Small periods last about an hour with the rising and setting of the moon. Fishing during an important phase of the moon could not be easier. You checked your sun table. It tells you when the moon will be at its best. You catch a lot of big fish. However, it's pretty clear that not every day ends with multiple headlines. With that in mind, there is another factor to consider: choosing the right moon phase.
Anglers should consider the four phases of the moon: new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter. Many anglers swear that 90% of your lifetime catch comes on a full and new moon.
The idea behind moon phase fishing is that the higher the tide, the more active the fish will be. The strongest tides occur twice a month: at new moon, when the sun and moon both move in the same direction, and at full moon, when they move from opposite sides of the planet.

Of course, this is not something that the entire fishing community agrees on. As with all fishing, there are plenty of people who will confidently give you the opposite advice. They emphasize that the first and last quarter are the best phases of the moon for fishing.
Others say you should only fish at night when the moon is full. The theory here is that the moonlight allows you to see the fish better. Thanks to this, they eat well at night, so they are less hungry the next day. By the same logic, you should only fish during the day on a new moon because fish are less likely to hunt in the dark.

Although this is a good bite, be careful when fishing during a full or new moon. This is especially true at night and especially if you are fishing from rocks or docks. In some parts of the world, tides can be as high as 40-60 feet, with water levels rising incredibly fast. Don't miss other connections.
Even if you have strong faith in the sun, there is still a chance that your fishing trip could go wrong. Other factors such as weather and air pressure will have a much greater effect than the moon. If a cold front is approaching, even two full moons won't do you much good. The fish will probably move away from the cold and become inactive.
We know some of the things the moon does. Many saltwater fish synchronize their spawning with the tides, allowing tidal currents to carry their larvae to safe, shallow estuaries. Currents also stir up nutrients from the sea floor. Bait fish feed on these nutrients, while prey fish feed on the bait fish. And we catch game fish. This is the circle of life.

But what about the solar theory itself? Has any of this been proven true? In other words, can any legitimate scientific research be backed up?
In developing his hypothesis, John Alden Knight attempted to systematically investigate the position of the moon in 200 catches of both record-sized fish and record numbers of fish. He found that about 90% of them occurred during the new moon. Based on this data, he focused much of his future research on this part of the tidal calendar.
Another experiment that supported Knight's theory was conducted by Dr. Frank A. Brown. Brown was a biologist at Northwestern University. One day, he ordered a live oyster to fly to his laboratory. He was not after the fish feast. Instead, he wanted to investigate whether the oysters were affected by the movement of the moon.

Oysters usually open their shells at high tide, and for the first two weeks they continued to open as the tide returned home. However, after two weeks, they changed their rhythm to when the moon was direct or underfoot, the two main periods of the lunar day.
Crucial evidence? Not entirely. As you can see, many studies contradict the main assumptions of the theory.
In 2010, Professor Mike Allen published a study on the effects of lunar activity. He wanted to see if there was any evidence that the phases of the moon affected bass casting times or catch rates.

Alan assisted Porter Hall, a trophy bass fisherman, with hundreds of catches over 10 pounds. Hall kept a detailed record of every fish he caught. Professor Allen then worked out how his connections corresponded to the lunar calendar. Turns out not so good.
The bite has been pretty consistent throughout the month. 21 percent of the fish landed on the new moon. Twenty-eight percent on a full moon. In short, about half of the fish are caught in the middle of the month, with the first and last quarter accounting for another 49%.
So a big piece of cheese in the sky does nothing for freshwater fish. That's logical. The movement in the pool is much less than in the sea. The real nail in the coffin will be similar evidence for ocean species.

A few years after Professor Allen published his findings on bass, Sam Mossman of Marlin Magazine decided to do something similar with big game. In particular, he decided to see if the striped merlin bite was related to the moon's journey around us.
The hearing needed data to test this theory. A lot of data. He contacted New Zealand's Bay of Islands Swordfish Club, the second oldest sport fishing club in the world, and asked to check their catch records. Being good people, Mosman was given access to all their years since 1929.
After a long day of copying records and a week of digitizing numbers, the hearing had the data it needed. Merlin was worth eighty-four years, all drawn in the phases of the moon. So how did the theory of the moon come about? Not good

On average, the best time to fish was before the full moon. The worst moment was after. These numbers rose again in the first quarter. However, catches were fairly consistent throughout the month. It was decent fishing that happened in space.
The moon obviously affects fishing. This leads to conversion. However, other factors such as weather and water temperature have a greater influence. The thing is, each moon phase produces the best and worst fishing of the month.
