Transfer credit may be applied toward major, minor and/or general education requirements pending approval. Transfer courses are not included in the Stony Brook GPA and require a grade or grades of C or higher.

Check the transfer database at /transfer to see if the course you want to take has been approved. If the course is not on this list, please consult with your academic advisor in Academic and Transition Consulting Services and complete the Credit Transfer Evaluation form before applying for the course.

Stony Brook students must attend an approved joint degree program offered through the International Academic Program (IAP) in the Office of Global Affairs. All other international credits earned during the summer or winter are not considered transfer credits applicable to your Stony Brook degree program. This includes international loans from US institutions other than IAP or SUNY. New York State residents participating in an IAP-approved international program must pay the in-state tuition fee for the course; All other students participating in an IAP-approved international summer program will pay out-of-state tuition for the course. If you are a New York State (NYS) resident seeking TAP or Excelsior, review your TAP summary page and your Excelsior summary page in SOLAR to ensure you meet all criteria. Students who wish to re-register for a course (second attempt) may begin re-registration beginning August 15 for fall courses and around January 20 for spring courses, after all first-time enrollees have had a chance to enroll and wait for spots. . Check the course schedule for specific dates.

Some classes are designated as "High Demand" or "HDCA" courses. Placement in these classrooms is highly unlikely — and there is no guarantee that there will be space for any of them. If there are no available places when you try to enroll, you can add yourself to the course's waiting list (if available). You may want to take classes again during the winter and summer months when there are usually more seats.

Department Of History

If you wish to repeat a course for a third time or more, obtain an application from your general academic advisor and a letter of support from the academic department offering the course. A third or more allowed attempt (pending field) cannot be processed until the first day of class.

If you repeat a course in which you earned a P, S, or D or higher on your first attempt, you will not receive credit a second time. Course retest scores along with your first attempt score will appear on the transcript and all attempts will count toward your total GPA.
