The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell and UML) is a public research university located in Lowell, Massachusetts, with a satellite campus in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The University of Massachusetts is the northernmost member of the public university system and has been accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (NECHE) since 1975.

Lowell State College began as Lowell Normal School in 1894 as a teacher training institution for women. Massachusetts' 10th and last charter school opened in 1898 with 108 students and 5 teachers. The first school opened the following year on the corner of Broadway and Wilder Street and quickly became a city landmark.
Designed by local firm Stickney & Austin, the building reflects period styles such as classic symmetry, arched doorways, cast-iron chandeliers and a Beaux-Arts style with yellow brickwork. Its design was partly influenced by Lowell High School, also designed by Lowell native Frederick W. Stickney. The hall's namesake, Frank Coburn, served as the school's first principal until 1908.
After being threatened with closure during the Great Depression, school officials rallied local support to help them stay afloat. A delegation of prominent people representing Lowell's powerful interest groups traveled to Boston to convince state officials of the school's importance. As a result, the school not only survived but grew and developed. In 1950, Dr. Daniel O'Leary took over as chairman and initiated a major development program. The physical plant on the campus expanded from a single structure to a multi-building complex in the post-war era, becoming what is now the UMass Lowell South Campus.

In response to the growing need for qualified teachers, the legislature reorganized Lowell State College's regular schools in 1960, expanding beyond education to include bachelor's degree programs in nursing and other fields such as music. Since 1967, the university has been authorized to award two consecutive degrees: Master of Education and Master of Music.
Established in 1895 as the Lowell Textile School, the school was established to train technicians and managers in Lowell's booming textile industry. Modeled after the now-defunct Pennsylvania Polytechnic College, the Lowell Textile Factory was a joint effort between the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the corporation to establish a school dedicated to textile education. Under the guidance of founder James T. Smith, Lowell Textile opened in February 1897 on the top floor of a downtown mall on Middle Street. The school offered a three-year curriculum in cotton and wool production, design, textile chemistry and dyeing.
In 1903 the school moved from the city center to its permanent location on the northwest side of the Merrimack River. Resembling a yellow brick factory, Southwick Hall was for Royal and Dierex Southwick. The Southwicks, grandparents of wealthy businessman Frederick Ayer, were Quakers and abolitionists who came to Lowell in the 1820s to help found the Lowell Carpet Company. A year later, the school offered its first bachelor's degree in textile dyeing and textile engineering.

In 1953, President Martin Lydon expanded the curriculum to include plastics, leather, paper and electronic technology programs, increased liberal arts offerings, and dissolved the Lowell Institute of Technology.
In 1956 he headed the institute decisively in general engineering and established a bachelor's degree program. The textile program ended in 1971, reflecting the closure of most of the city's factories.
Lowell State and Lowell Tech merged in 1975 to become Lowell University. The 1000-seat Durgani Hall became the seat of the Music Department.

Francis College of Engineering is named after James B. Francis, a hydraulic engineer who began his career at Lowell during the Industrial Revolution.

The UMass Lowell Center for Baseball Studies is part of the College of Engineering. First funded in 1998, the facility is an official baseball bat and ball testing center. The center's researchers include a mechanical engineering department, full-time engineers, and 6-12 laboratory assistants.
