Bcps Calendar 2019 – The Burke County Board of Education took a closer look at the Burke County Public Schools calendar for the coming year during its regular work session Monday at the Olive Hill Resource Center.

The first day of classes in the 180-day schedule for the 2019-20 school year is set for Monday, August 26, and the last day of classes for Friday, June 5, 2020, which is a half day.

Teacher workdays include mandatory dates scheduled for Wednesday, August 21; Tuesday, November 5, 2019; and Monday, June 8, 2020. Other estimated business days are Monday, August 19 through Friday, August 23; Friday, October 11; Tuesday, January 21, 2020; Monday, March 2, 2020; and from Tuesday, June 9, 2020 to Friday, June 12, 2020.

Board President Randy Burns said in a work session that the board is considering school calendars for the year, rather than approving three years at a time, as has been done in the past, because of the continued hope that the General Assembly in North Carolina will have more flexibility in scheduling systems.

As usual, the calendar has a built-in timer to record days missed due to bad weather. BCPS Superintendent Larry Putnam told the board that time is usually around nine days, and for the past five years, the school system has allowed it to be less than 180 days and avoided adding comp days.

The calendar will be voted on as scheduled for approval at next Monday's regular council meeting.

Weather Decision Updated From Bcps For Wednesday, Jan. 30

The resolution, prepared by BCPS Chief Financial Officer Keith Lawson, showed projected revenue sources for the current school year compared to the previous year.

Projected state funding increased by $1,818,925 (2.3 percent) from $78,403,505 to $80,222,430; local funding decreased $18,234 (0.1 percent) from $16,097,687 to $16,079,453; federal funds increased $225,775 (3.1 percent) from $7,175,283 to $7,401,058; funding for the child nutrition program decreased by $22,366 (0.4 percent) from $6,336,516 to $6,314,150; and Fund 8 funds increased $96,895 (2 percent) from $4,943,029 to $5,039,924.

The estimated fund balance of $2,198,867 as of June 30, 2019 is $488,455 less than the fund balance of $2,687,322 as of June 30, 2018.

The budget revision charges the ADA Elevator Project at Glen Alpine Elementary School, $18,000 from the Freedom High School Gym Door Replacement and $18,000 from the East Burke High School Gym Door Replacement and transfers these funds to the budget. a reserve that is currently set at $1,246,000.

The audit also charges $25,384 from vocational and technical education equipment and attributes it to CTE supplies and materials. And $20,807 is taken from the East Burke and Draughn High School Living Projects and donated to off-budget housing project funds.

During Monday's work session, the board also discussed changes to the original teacher assistance plan, including the licensing process, program mentor responsibilities and key responsibilities, and possible changes to the field trip policy.
