Students who live on campus often enjoy a greater sense of community, which makes it more convenient since it's only a short walk from school facilities. Arlington Public Schools Superintendent Francisco Durán is proposing an earlier school start next fall and more school days than the current school year.
If approved, the 2023-24 calendar would have 180 school days for all students and would begin on Aug. 21, 2023. This year, elementary students have 175 school days and high school students 174, which is below the state standard . none 180 days and APS calendars before the pandemic.

The proposal comes after APS received more than 7,100 responses from families and staff earlier this fall in a survey that gauged approval of the current calendar and asked for input on three possible calendars for next year. Some respondents urged APS to align its calendar with neighboring jurisdictions, such as Fairfax County Public Schools, while others suggested reducing the number of cultural and religious holidays, according to presentation materials for an upcoming school board meeting this thursday
"It's important to coordinate with neighboring districts for recess and commencement day … so our schools can be fully staffed with their teachers," said one interviewee at the presentation.

Another said they "support the spirit of inclusiveness but do not support APS accommodating so many religious festivals."

Durán's proposal has the same student start date as the proposed or approved calendars for many neighboring jurisdictions, except for FCPS, which does not yet appear to have a proposal.

Durán's calendar starts a full week ahead of the preferences of many respondents and the calendar committee, which is made up of a group of principals, PTA members, teacher union representatives and central office staff. It also has a longer winter break than both of these calendars.
The school board will receive more information on the preferred schedule and alternatives on Thursday. The vote on Durán's proposed schedule for 2023-24 is scheduled for Thursday, December 15.

Debate Wins Team And Individual Award
The proposed increase would represent a return to the pre-pandemic aspects of the calendars that the watchdog group Arlington Parents for Education has been advocating for the past year. He says this is one way to address his central point of learning loss.
"Abandoning our longstanding commitment to provide at least 180 days of school, especially given the historic learning loss facing APS students today, is the wrong approach," the group said in a recent analysis of the schedule. "Our students deserve to see their school system return to its historic practice of meeting the Virginia state standards of 180 days and 990 hours."

The APE says that over the past 10 years, 181 days have been the norm for student attendance days. APS fell below 180 days in the 2020-21 school year, at the start of the pandemic, and has not returned to 180 days since then, he said.

A few years ago, APS started the school year before Labor Day after former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam allowed schools to start up to two weeks before September vacation.

"Despite this change, APS used to start later than neighboring departments," the group said. "The result is fewer school days for Arlington children."

Academic Planning And Registration
Beginning in the 2021/22 school year, APS also added four non-Christian religious holidays, which some respondents objected to.
The proposed 2023-24 calendar would take into account Yom Kippur (September 25) and Eid al-Fitr (April 10). This fall, APS took days off for Rosh Hashanah and Diwali, but these are not included in next year's schedule, presumably because they are scheduled to take place on weekends next fall.

"This look back at 10 years of calendar history and comparing the current APS calendar to our neighbors' calendar shows that whether it's an earlier start, a later end, the use of federal holidays, or different patterns in winter break , APS. how can he fulfill the 180 days", said the APE.

Durán suggests 31 days off for public holidays, winter break and religious holidays, as well as assessment and debriefing days.
